Carbon offsetting of the Climate Finance Day event:

As the Carbon Neutral Partner, EcoAct has selected these three carbon offsetting projects which comply with the most rigorous international carbon standards (Gold Standard and VCS) and best practices (ICROA) and contribute to the achievement of many Sustainable Development Goals.

Challenge:

In Peru, at the heart of the Vilcabamba-Amboró area, one of the world’s greatest biodiversity hotspots, close to the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu, the construction of an inter-oceanic road uniting Brazil with Peru jeopardizes the tropical rainforest.

Solution:

The Madre de Dios project dramatically reduces deforestation in the Peruvian Amazon, preserving 100 000 hectares. It protects the livelihood of local indigenous communities such as the Yine, Huitoto, Mashco Piro, Yora and Amahuaca tribes who rely on the forest for their survival, and promotes sustainable harvesting in the timber industry, respecting the fauna and flora of the forest.

Results:

More than 470 jobs were created to protect the forest from illegal logging and poaching, amongst which 100% Peruvian employees and 70% local.
700 animal and plant species have been saved, including a number of vulnerable species.
A sustainable logging industry has been created through responsible forestry concessions, Maderacre and Maderyja. Overall, the project benefits to over 6,700 beneficiaries.
